250,000 people had no access to healthcare.

Dr. Eugene’s dream to build New Hope Hospital was built on story after story of Haitians losing loved ones because they could not access proper medical care. As a primary doctor at a small clinic, Dr. Eugene had limited resources, and no way to transport patients the three hours to the nearby hospital if needed. Instead, he heard nightmarish tales; a father who lost five children because they were poisoned. A mother who spent years trying to get pregnant, only to lose her only child because the midwife did not properly handle the umbilical cord.
To get to the closest hospital, the 250,000 people of Plain du Nord had to pay for expensive taxis or take a painstakingly slow motorbike. Even if you could make the journey, many were turned away if they could not afford care.
Dr. Eugene knew there had to be a better way.
Your support of one man’s vision is rewriting the story for thousands.
He got to work. Every evening after working at the clinic, Dr. Eugene began driving around the northern region surrounding Plaine du Nord, Haiti, to inquire about funding a hospital. The 250,000 people of Plain du Nord need better access to care, he said. As he met with other doctors and medical workers, he found resounding support for the idea. “You read my mind,” said one doctor. “But we don’t have the money.”
With growing support for the dream of a hospital, Dr. Eugene knew they needed a way to manage the funds. Bill and Wanda Musgrave, in the U.S., provided this help by starting Partners 4 New Hope, Inc. Then, they watched as a miracle began to unfold; people from around the world — people like you! — began to show up.
“Money began coming in,” Dr. Eugene said. “I knew God’s hand was on this project.”
With a financial foundation to start the project, Dr. Eugene put together a team of Haitian engineers and builders and announced plans to open New Hope Hospital. News quickly spread throughout the region. “Many people who heard the news came to me and said, ‘We’re so happy to have a hospital!’” Dr. Eugene said. “That makes my heart sing.”
As generous donors kept giving, the New Hope engineers kept building. Two years later, in October 2016, New Hope Hospital officially opened its doors.
Today, New Hope serves over 200 patients per day. It is located in the central area of Plain du Nord, easily accessible to the surrounding communities. Doctors from local clinics regularly thank Dr. Eugene, telling him that they are now less overwhelmed with patients and can provide better care. What truly makes this hospital different is that, thanks to supporters like you, New Hope is able to serve the low-income population regardless of their ability to pay.
Now, the stories of needless death or lack of access to care have a different ending. New Hope Hospital trains midwives and delivers over 1,500 healthy babies each year. Patients with an emergency, such as poison or critical injury, are seen and cared for right away. Lives are being saved rather than lost.
“We are so happy to be here for them,” Dr. Eugene said. “It is a privilege to serve the people of Haiti.”
